I'm Melissa Pedersen, a Canadian jewellery artist based in Calgary, Alberta. I create handmade sterling silver jewellery inspired by my garden, local wildflowers and the beauty of the natural world.
I’ve always been drawn to the transition from winter to spring. The transformation of death to life is what captivates me. Signs of spring find their way into my work: I use sprouts, seeds, raindrops and budding flowers as intentional symbols of hope, life, growth and perseverance.
As an artist I love how the process of creating jewellery reflects this beautiful transformation. The old is made new as the raw materials are worked and the rough is refined, until something beautiful emerges.
How it's made matters
Every piece of jewellery begins at my Calgary studio workbench, where I work with sterling silver, gold, gemstones, and pearls.
My tools range from traditional jewellery-making equipment, including a jeweller's saw, files, hammers, and a torch, to the small tools I use to carve, shape, and capture the textures of nature. I love experimenting with different techniques, whether I'm working with real leaf textures, forming tiny botanical details, or adding a gemstone to a one of a kind design.
I make each piece by hand, from the first stages of shaping and forming to the final polishing. Some designs are made in small batches, while others are entirely one of a kind. I want each piece to be beautifully made, comfortable to wear, and something you'll enjoy for years to come.
